Today I visited Julian Stadon’s SLARiPS installation at the John Curtin Art Gallery at Curtin University. It is part of their current exhibitions until 1 August 2008. The idea? Put on a headset with a webcam attached, look through a pair of goggles, watch an avatar jump out of Second Life and hold it on a paddle while you move it down onto your desk.
Julian kindly let me film the installation, which explains it so much better than words could:

I can just imagine inviting all my sl friends to come and dance around my desk. But what if anyone were to invite me to their desk? Would I get back in one piece? How would I feel as a Lilliputian in a land of giants? As you said, there is a lot of “what if” going on here.
Thanks Kathryn,
I don’t know when but sometime soon this stuff will end up life size in your living room. Exciting times! Congratulations to Julian. Will def check it out in situ.
Here is the work being done in this area by Georgia Tech: http://arsecondlife.gvu.gatech.edu/
Amazing, really. I kept thinking about how this would work in a classroom to either teach History or Literature where multiple avatars act out scenes from a story or novel or historical event the students were reading (all moved and designed by the students of course)…one day… Well done, Julian.
