She says &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/freerangelibrarian.com\/2006\/07\/dump_mel.php\">yes<\/a>&#8220;.  In the <a href=\"http:\/\/lisnews.org\/pollBooth.pl?qid=131&#038;aid=-1\">poll<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/lisnews.org\">LISNews<\/a> about two thirds say &#8220;no&#8221; and one third say &#8220;yes&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 153);\"><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 0, 204);\"><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">The arguments centre around whether ALA is endorsing Mel&#8217;s other opinions when he endorses their &#8220;Read&#8221; campaign. Do they want to be associated with his views? Should they use his celebrity power and appeal to people who otherwise wouldn&#8217;t look at their library?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 153);\"><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 0, 204);\"><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">A look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alastore.ala.org\/SiteSolution.taf?_pi=453\">ALA&#8217;s online store<\/a> shows that there are also &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alastore.ala.org\/SiteSolution.taf?_sn=catalog&#038;_pn=sub_category&amp;_op=44\">Read&#8221; Posters <\/a>of Brittany Spears, Bill Gates, Colin Farrell, Kiera Knightly. Personally, I find the Indigo Girls, Tim Robbins, Melissa Etheridge and Yo Yo Ma posters very appealing, but know that some people would have real problems with the lifestyles or opinions of some of these.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 153);\"><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 0, 204);\"><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Maybe an association that sells an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alastore.ala.org\/SiteSolution.taf?_sn=catalog&#038;_pn=product_detail&amp;_op=2127\">&#8220;I read banned books&#8221;<\/a> badge, isn&#8217;t in a moral position to ban one of their own posters due to slimey beliefs of the person in it? (But, is the logical extension of this that they should actively go out and find people with a wide range of views&#8230;even offensive..for their campaign?).<\/p>\n<p>I like the approach of the University of Wisconsin law librarians, who created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.wisc.edu\/blogs\/wisblawg\/2006\/04\/read_posters_featuring_uw_law.html\">a series of &#8220;Read&#8221; posters<\/a> featuring UW Law Faculty members. Or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lansing.lib.il.us\/\">Lansing Public Library<\/a>, who has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lansinglibrary\/sets\/72057594106946697\/\">series of Read posters<\/a> featuring prominent local citizens like the Fire Chief or the Youth Centre Director.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 153);\"><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 0, 204);\"><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">I think the <a href=\"http:\/\/alia.org.au\">Australian Library and Information Association<\/a> got it right with their poster promotion. See their <a href=\"http:\/\/alia.org.au\/alianet\/webcards\/\">&#8220;webcards&#8221; page<\/a> for more.
