{"id":3400,"date":"2011-10-07T21:15:27","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T13:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/librariansmatter.com\/blog\/?p=3400"},"modified":"2011-10-07T21:15:27","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T13:15:27","slug":"ada-lovelace-day-little-movie-of-seven-women-in-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/librariansmatter.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/07\/ada-lovelace-day-little-movie-of-seven-women-in-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"Ada Lovelace Day &#8211; Little movie of seven women in tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October 7 2011 is <a href=\"http:\/\/findingada.com\/\">Ada Lovelace Day<\/a> &#8211; a day of blogging that celebrates women in engineering, science, technology and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>(If you think that is a bit odd, &#8211; yes, the date was in March in previous years.)<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 <a href=\"https:\/\/librariansmatter.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/24\/ada-lovelace-day-bess-sadler\/\">I blogged about the wonderful Bess Sadler <\/a>who created the Open Source Discovery Layer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.virginia.edu\/digital\/resndev\/blacklight.html\">Blacklight<\/a> &#8211; but even more importantly is firmly committed to Open Source as a social justice issue.<\/p>\n<p>Today I was sitting in a session at <a href=\"http:\/\/thatcampcanberra.org\/bootcamp\/\">THATcamp Canberra bootcamp<\/a>, all about using the <a href=\"http:\/\/itee.uq.edu.au\/~eresearch\/projects\/aus-e-lit\/lore.php\">Aus-e-Lit&#8217;s LORE Firefox Plugin.<\/a> In a role reversal, the person contributing the humanities subject knowledge to the project was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/emsah\/index.html?page=114853&amp;pid=21662\">Roger Osborne<\/a>, while the technologist who coded the project was a younger woman, <a href=\"http:\/\/itee.uq.edu.au\/~agerber\/\">Anna Gerber<\/a>. I thought about interviewing Anna (and still would be interested), but then I looked around the room and thought &#8220;this event is FULL of women. If they are here, they cannot deny that they are women in tech. I could talk to them. I wonder if they identify as women in tech?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; during the break I found six generous women who agreed to give a quick summary of what they do in tech. I explained to them that I have a lot of women in my <a href=\"http:\/\/handbook.curtin.edu.au\/units\/12\/12442.html\">introductory technology unit at Curtin University<\/a>, who may not think of themselves as techie&#8230;. but if they listened they may realise that you do not need to know 20 different coding languages to be a woman in tech.
