{"id":280,"date":"2007-06-21T23:11:47","date_gmt":"2007-06-21T15:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/librariansmatter.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/21\/how-to-talk-hot-tech-at-a-library-conference-bigwig-style\/"},"modified":"2007-06-21T23:11:47","modified_gmt":"2007-06-21T15:11:47","slug":"how-to-talk-hot-tech-at-a-library-conference-bigwig-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/librariansmatter.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/21\/how-to-talk-hot-tech-at-a-library-conference-bigwig-style\/","title":{"rendered":"How to talk hot tech at a library conference &#8211; BigWig style."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How can we talk about the newest web tools and ideas at library conferences when papers need to be submitted months in advance?<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, the cities of Sydney and Melbourne take it in turns to host the hottest library tech conference &#8211; one year it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.information-online.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Information Online<\/a> in Sydney , the next it&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vala.org.au\/conf2008.htm\" target=\"_blank\">VALA<\/a> conference in Melbourne. Abstracts for VALA 2008 were submitted  in May this year. Successful papers need to be complete by September &#8211; 5 full months before the conference is held. This is typical for a conference, but it stops people discussing hot new tools and ideas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/180\/402594061_bdbb9fab7a.jpg?v=0\" title=\"Dog in big wig\" alt=\"Dog in big wig\" width=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><small><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mms0131\/402594061\/\" target=\"_blank\">Untitled<\/a> uploaded to flickr.com on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mms0131\/archives\/date-posted\/2007\/02\/26\/\" class=\"Plain\">February 26, 2007<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mms0131\/\" title=\"Link to mms0131's photos\"><strong>mms0131<\/strong><\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p> This Saturday 23 June, a mob of creative librarians are going to test an alternative to this model during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/eventsandconferencesb\/annual\/2007a\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\">American Library Association<\/a> conference. The <a href=\"http:\/\/litablog.org\/2007\/06\/07\/social-software-showcase-sponsored-by-bigwig\/\" target=\"_blank\">Library and Information Technology Association&#8217;s interest group for blogs, wikis and social software<\/a> (the BIGWIGS )  are holding a round table discussion of hot new tools that may have a use for libraries. They hope this will be informal and speakers will learn from participants.<\/p>\n<p>Each speaker has prepared a presentation that is available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/showcase.litablog.org\/index.php\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">Bigwig Social Software Showcase<\/a> wiki.  This includes screencasts and videos. Everyone is welcome to comment on each page of the wiki. It&#8217;s a great resource for librarians world-wide who want to be up to date.
