Library surrealness on the radio

Uncategorized

I’m in Brisbane to give a talk at QUT today. Surrealness happened via the radio in the taxi on the way from the airport.

First surreal thing – Nick Earls, a novelist who wrote Bachelor Kisses , is the radio announcer. It’s like switching on to find Tim Winton doing the night shift in Perth.

Second surreal thing – radio quiz is happening and contestant is a librarian. At QUT. Where I’m speaking the next day. Instead of launching straight into the questions, Nick says something like “Librarians aren’t just about shelving books anymore, are they?” – giving Julie-Anne a two minute spot on statewide radio to talk about what we do now. She went for it – mentioning Social networking and Web 2.0 and reference support via VoIP. Hooray for Julie-Anne.

I think I’m going to love this town too.

UPDATE: I met Julanne at the unconference this afternoon. And that’s how you spell her name 🙂
