I’m giving a presentation about the Horizon Report 2008 at work today. Three of the technologies likely to impact on education in the next few years are grassroots video, mobile broadband and data mashups. This example of my husband getting fit, embedded in my blog, is an example of these three.
By the way the video is hosted on Flickr, which now allows uploads of small video clips, Wii Fit jogging using an exercise bike .

I love the Wii Fit – watching our Miis getting fatter and thinner. The first time I played on it my Wii fit age was 51 I have got it down to 37! Younger than my “real age”. I think my game play has just gotten much better than the first time.
I am not a gamer by nature but there is a social aspect to Wii. that I really like. My sister’s whole family have Miis from the youngest who is 3.
The nature of gaming is changing and I am very tempted to buy one myself and I have resisted gaming consoles for years.
I think a lot about mashups watching my daughter (Yr 12) do her homework. She has a plethera of applications open, works with lots of open source software and talks to her friends on MySpace and MSN all at once. She often mashes different applications together to get something that works for her. It’s so organic and exciting. It is invigorating to watch her work.
Hi Kim, Our kids create miis for all the visiting kids. I love the way some of them chose miis that look just like them, while others choose an obviusly fantasy look.
My favourite? A little boy whose mum wears lots of eye shadow has a mii with the most gorgeous made-up blue eyelids.
As for mashups, I want to know where is our library data being offered out to the public to play with and re-purpose? While we probably won’t all have Superpatrons, it would be interesting to see what could be done .

What a great idea – if you have an exercise bike of course. Rumour is that EA Games are developing a fitness title that will pick up where Wii Fit leaves off. Maybe you should contact them and suggest it as a possible option in their title.

Haha cool! I’ve been having a hard time on the jogging in one spot thing…. kinda ruins the feel a little
So will try this when we get a half-decent exercise bike that won’t break or sqeak after 5 minutes.
Just realised you are in Fremantle. Cool! We’re in Thornlie, and have gigged at Freo in the last month. Will be back there asap. Love Freo.
Great idea!
I wonder if there are any other ideas that could be used for “cross training” on the Wii Fit.
Just found this post; tried Wii Fit jogging with my bicycle on a trainer last night; it showed that I was going very slowly . . . slower than when I jog; it doesn’t register real well. I ‘jog’ on a small trampoline – an ‘urban rebounder’ – it is easier on the joints, allows for more variation, and gives you a good workout.
The WII system should have something like a paper route game. You could pedal the bike through various routes and use the hand remote to throw the newspapers. Objective could be first level…flat road easy houses to upper levels that have inclines as roads and bushes and trees in the way. And yes…the Dog chasing scenes where you have to pedal like crazy to get away. The goal is of course to deliver your newspapers. Some added stuff could be capture the dog chasing you and use it to help pull you up the hills.
Oh I hope the Nintendo folk are reading your comment Den. I’d pay for a game like that …and just think …they would have the chance to market the “wii bike” accessory to the rapidly saturating wii market …
