Kathryn, I've been in two minds for a couple of years now about the argument that 'sensible voices' need to be there. Sometimes I think the tools need to be built a little differently in the first place. I had that discussion over at Larvy Prod about eighteen months ago (a large political group blog) - not that they are that insane, really, but there were issues with comments management that were driven very quickly into a corner with the Sierra thing.

I tend to think more that the sensible voices will find each other and block out the rest. As sometimes occurs (and sometimes not) with not so new media (Caroline Overington, anyone?).

Great post, though - thank you, as always, for being right up to the minute. Off to look at the Original network and the NMD post now, have a very happy New Year.

Thanks Myles.

Two-edged sword, though - forums that could degenerate to a delinqunt morass really need voices like yours knocking some sense into them and showing how these tools could be used to make superfabby tubes.

Miles / Myles now unconfounded.

Hey Kathryn,

You hit the nail on the head. As you said, all this technology has fantastic potential when used correctly - unfortunately, most of the time it isn't, and the tubes are suffering because of it. This is the reason why I'm not subscribing to any of this new media bollocks any more.

Oh, BTW - you are getting your My/iles' confused - the Original Social Network is Miles Burke :)
